Photography graduate Bruce Bentley applied the skills and knowledge gained from photography and design courses at TAFE NSW to develop an online photography course that will improve the mental health of veterans. Supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veteran Mindfulness Australia has hired Mr Bentley to add his photography course to its range of online services. “The process of identifying, framing and recording a photograph of a scene or product requires a focused mindset,” said Mr. Bentley. “This offers significant benefits to veterans, especially in achieving a state of attention and awareness.” Laura Bailey of Veteran Mindfulness Australia said the course designed by Mr. Bentley teaches participants how to be present, observe and appreciate their surroundings. “This course improves awareness and presence at a given point in time, which is essential for healthy mindfulness,” Ms. Bailey said. “Mindfulness helps our Veterans achieve mental clarity and a calm state of mind.” As the process of photographic creation is similar to the design process applied to graphic design, Mr. Bentley added a TAFE NSW IV certificate in design to his existing certificate and diploma in photography. “The professional skills I learned in these courses have allowed me to build a portfolio of business clients,” said Mr. Bentley. With Mr Bentley’s photography course considered welfare work, Australian government employment prospects predict that employment in this field will increase, with an estimated increase of just over 65,000 in 2019 to over 80,000 by 2024.
